Note: High Altitude

The St. Regis Deer Valley is situated in an alpine setting at an elevation of 7452 feet above sea level. There are a few practical measures that will aid in your adjustment to the environment and reduce your chances of experiencing symptoms. Most healthy people will experience some measure of altitude illness upon arrival at high elevations, such as headache, difficulty sleeping, mild shortness of breath, tightness in the chest and fatigue. These symptoms are generally resolved in a day or two with rest, hydration and over the counter headache medication.

  • Drink plenty of water and avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol until you are acclimated. The mountain climate is dry and dehydration decreases the body’s ability to acclimatize to high altitude.
  • Oxygen enrichment can counteract the effects of altitude sickness. Oxygen inhalation treatments are available at Remède Spa. Please contact Butler Service or dial Remède Spa (5830.)
  • Protect yourself from the sun by applying sunscreen and lip balm, and by wearing sunglasses. With less water vapor in the air and less distance from the sun, the effects of the sun are much stronger than at lower elevations.
  • Moderate your physical activity at first, as the effects of exercise are intensified at an altitude of 8,000 feet, there is 25% less oxygen in the air than at sea level.
  • Eat foods high in potassium. Foods such as broccoli, bananas, avocado, cantaloupe, celery, greens, bran, chocolate, granola, dates, dried fruit, potatoes and tomatoes will help you replenish electrolytes by balancing salt intake.
  • Dress in layers so you can comfortably adjust to the broad range of temperatures typical of mountain climates throughout the day.
  • Please consult a doctor if symptoms are extreme, such as severe difficulty breathing, a persistent dry cough, dizziness or loss of coordination.
